Tender Awarded for New Gymnasium Roof at Lumsden Academy
Work will soon begin to replace the gymnasium roof at Lumsden Academy, with the awarding of a tender valued at $137,000 to LSG Construction Limited of Gander.
“Upgrades such as this are among the more than 1,700 repairs and maintenance projects approved for schools across the province in the past nine years,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “Our government has taken a systematic approach to upgrading existing infrastructure over that time period, ensuring that our educational facilities remain safe and comfortable environments in which to teach and learn.”
With this latest investment, about $366,000 has been allocated for upgrades at Lumsden Academy in recent years, including new windows, siding and other improvements.
“This project is a further example of this government's commitment to providing the best possible facilities for students living in rural Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Eli Cross, MHA for Bonavista North. “Continued investment in Lumsden Academy assures a comfortable safe environment in which teaching and learning are allowed to grow in this community.”
Budget 2012 includes $115 million for new and ongoing K-12 infrastructure, including $29 million for priority repairs and maintenance. Since 2004, about $567 million has been allocated for school infrastructure throughout the province. Nine new schools have opened; 10 more are in various stages of planning or construction; 12 major extension and renovation projects have been completed, and seven more are underway or in the planning stages.
