Over $200,000 in Scholarships Awarded to High School Graduates
Provincial Scholarships totalling more than $200,000 have been awarded to 201 recent high school graduates throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
The scholarships, which range in value from $1,000 to $2,500, are used to help students pursue post-secondary education. Eligibility for scholarships is based on public examination results.
“These scholarships acknowledge the achievement of students from communities across Newfoundland and Labrador – urban and rural – and from schools both large and small,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “As a government we believe it is important to celebrate the accomplishments of our students and, through these scholarships, help contribute to their post-secondary education and training.”
The Junior Jubilee Scholarship, valued at $2,500, is awarded to the student who attains the highest overall marks in the province. This year’s recipient is Hayam Hamodat, a graduate of Gonzaga Regional High in St. John’s.
The Constable W.C. Moss Scholarship is awarded to the son or daughter of a member of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (active, retired or deceased) who, other than the Junior Jubilee winner, achieved the highest public examination marks. This year’s recipient is Russell MacLean, a graduate of St. James Regional High School in Port aux Basques.
The Provincial Government also awards $1,000 Electoral District Scholarships to the three high school graduates in each electoral district with the highest marks.
Centenary of Responsible Government Scholarships, valued at $1,000, are awarded to the 55 students – other than the Junior Jubilee, W.C. Moss and the Electoral District Scholarships – with the highest marks.
