Riverside Elementary Celebrates Extension, Site Improvements

Students, teachers, and the entire school community of Riverside Elementary in Clarenville joined the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education, and the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Speaker of the House of Assembly and MHA for Trinity North, today (Monday, October 1) for a celebration marking the completion of an extension and site improvements at the school.

“Over $7 million was spent on the extension and site improvements to Riverside Elementary to accommodate an increased student population following the realignment of schools in the area,” said Minister Jackman. “This project is part of a comprehensive focus on school infrastructure that has seen about $567 million allocated for school improvements since 2004. These investments continue to provide our school communities with more modern, safe and comfortable learning facilities that will serve the needs of students for many years to come.”

The extension includes 10 additional classrooms, a kitchen, a lunch room/multi-purpose room, health room, special services room, as well as increased space for staff and administration. Outside improvements include new bus lanes and the relocation of the student playground.

“I am delighted to be celebrating with the Riverside Elementary school community on this special occasion as we officially open the extension to this beautiful school,” said MHA Wiseman. “Parents, teachers and students have expressed their excitement about the improvements that have been made to their learning environment.”

In addition, about $1.5 million was provided to the Town of Clarenville through the 2011 Municipal Capital Works Program for roadwork to enhance access to the elementary school. The total project cost, including funding provided by the Town of Clarenville, was about $1.95 million.

Since 2004, nine new schools have opened in Newfoundland and Labrador; 10 more are in various stages of planning or construction; 12 major extension and renovation projects have been completed, and seven more are underway or in the planning stages. In addition, more than 1,700 repairs and maintenance projects have been undertaken. This level of infrastructure investment is unprecedented in the province’s history.
