Heritage Collegiate Student Named 2012 Pearson Scholar

Asia Holloway, a student at Heritage Collegiate in Lethbridge, is the recipient of the 2012 Lester B. Pearson Scholarship, which is among the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most prestigious scholarships.

“Asia was selected on the basis of academic performance, involvement in sports, music, a wide range of extracurricular activities at both the school and community level, as well as her personal leadership qualities,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “The Heritage Collegiate school community, along with Asia’s family and friends, have much to celebrate. I have no doubt her experience at Pearson College will help her fulfill her long-term goals.”

The Lester B. Pearson Scholarship is valued at $34,000 annually, for a total of $68,000 provided for two years of study at Pearson College, a United World College in Victoria, B.C. In September, Asia will be among 200 students selected from more than 100 countries to be enrolled in the college’s pre-university International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program.

Minister Jackman noted Asia’s outstanding involvement in her school and community contributed greatly to her success in being awarded the scholarship. She participated on the cheerleading, volleyball, cross-country running and softball teams at her school, and also in several school and community-based choirs and bands. She was elected vice-president of her student council, and assisted her fellow students achieve academic success through the Tutoring for Tuition program. Outside of school, Asia is an active member of her church and an avid community volunteer.

The Provincial Government supports two students from Newfoundland and Labrador studying at Pearson College each year. Asia will join Erin Bonisteel from Crescent Collegiate in Blaketown, who received the 2011 Pearson Scholarship and will enter her second year of the two-year IB program in September.
