Contract Awarded to Replace Roof at Cowan Heights Elementary

Cowan Heights Elementary School in St. John’s will soon have a new roof, following the recent award of a $183,060 contract to NL Rubber Coating Corp.

“The Provincial Government recognizes the importance of maintaining our K-12 school infrastructure,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “This roofing project at Cowan Heights Elementary, which is expected to be completed over the summer, brings the total investment in recent improvements at the school to almost $593,000.”

Cowan Heights Elementary was opened in 1974 and today accommodates about 400 students from Kindergarten to Grade 7.

“I am very pleased with this investment to replace the roof at Cowan Heights Elementary,” said Dan Crummell, MHA for St. John’s West. “Our government is committed to enhancing school infrastructure for students, teachers, and staff.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity includes $115 million for new and ongoing K-12 infrastructure projects, including $29 million for priority repairs and maintenance.

Since 2004, about $567 million has been allocated for school infrastructure throughout the province. This level of infrastructure investments is unprecedented in the province’s history. More than 1,700 repairs and maintenance projects have been undertaken. Nine new schools have opened; 10 more are in various stages of planning or construction; 12 major extension and renovation projects have been completed, and six more are underway or in the planning stages.
