Student Will Be First To Use Jubilee Stamp
Starting Monday, and continuing for the remainder of the year, all outgoing mail from the Provincial Government will feature a postage meter stamp designed by a Grade 4 student from Greenwood Academy in Campbellton.
Karlie Pinsent is the winner of the Provincial Government’s postage meter stamp design contest, which was held to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the reign of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.
The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education, will present Miss Pinsent with a framed copy of her winning design in the mailroom of Confederation Building, East Block, on Monday, June 4, at 9:00 a.m. Karlie will also be the first person to send a letter featuring the new Jubilee stamp.
“We chose Grade 4 students for this contest because it is at this level that our students are introduced to the relationship between the British monarchy and Canada as part of the social studies curriculum,” said Minister Jackman. “This contest was designed to enhance our students’ awareness of this aspect of our history, and our democracy, and to let them be part of the activities marking this significant event in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.”
Wade Verge, MHA for Lewisporte, will also attend Monday’s presentation. “I am pleased and honoured to join with Karlie's family, her school, and her community in congratulating her on this very significant achievement,” said Mr. Verge. “We are all very proud of her.”
The postage meter stamp design contest is one of a series of activities being held in Newfoundland and Labrador this year to honour Her Majesty for a lifetime of dedication to public service.
