Further Building Upgrades to Begin at St. Matthew’s Elementary
St. Matthew’s Elementary in St. John’s will soon see the completion of an exterior facelift following the recent award of a tender, valued at almost $590,000, to J & T Construction Ltd. of Mount Pearl.
“This project represents the second phase of exterior upgrades at St. Matthew’s, and includes the replacement of cladding and windows on the second storey of the school,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “The Provincial Government is continuing to fund upgrades, renovations and repairs to school infrastructure throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. These projects help protect our investment in existing school facilities, and ensure students and staff members continue to enjoy safe, comfortable learning environments into the future.”
The St. Matthew’s upgrades are in addition to more than $870,000 spent on the first phase of the project, which included first storey exterior upgrades and sitework, bringing the total investment in the school to more than $1.46 million.
“I am pleased to see this project proceed,” said Dan Crummell, MHA for St. John’s West. “I am certain that the students and staff of St. Matthew’s Elementary will be delighted when the upgrades are complete.”
The work is expected to begin shortly and be completed in the fall of 2012.
Budget 2012: People and Prosperity includes $115 million for new and ongoing K-12 infrastructure, including $29 million for priority repairs and maintenance. Since 2004, over $567 million has been allocated for school infrastructure throughout the province, including new schools, extensions, redevelopments, renovations and approximately 1,700 repairs and maintenance projects.
