$2.4 Million Tender Awarded for Stephenville Crossing School

St. Michael’s Elementary in Stephenville Crossing will soon see the installation of a modern sprinkler system, and the removal of existing fireproofing, following the recent award of a $2.4 million tender to Brook Construction (2007) Inc. of Corner Brook.

The announcement was made at the school this morning (Friday, May 18) by the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education and the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills and MHA for St. George’s-Stephenville East.

“The Provincial Government is continuing to fund upgrades, renovations and repairs to school infrastructure throughout Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Minister Jackman. “These projects help protect our investment in existing school facilities, and ensure students and staff members continue to enjoy safe, comfortable learning environments into the future.”

St. Michael’s was opened in 1976, and the existing fireproofing contains asbestos, as was common in that era. While it poses no risk to the occupants, the installation of the new sprinkler system necessitates its removal.

“It is great to see our government’s commitment to St. Michael’s Elementary school,” said Minister Burke. “It is important for the staff, parents and students, to be reassured of our government’s support for St. Michael’s, and I am pleased to see this investment that will enhance their learning environment.”

Since 2004, over $3.6 million has been approved for infrastructure upgrades at St. Michael’s Elementary, including roofing, windows, and interior and exterior renovations.

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity includes $115 million for new and ongoing K-12 infrastructure, including $29 million for priority repairs and maintenance. Since 2004, over $567 million has been allocated for school infrastructure throughout the province, including new schools, extensions, redevelopments, renovations and approximately 1,700 repairs and maintenance projects.
