New Heating System Adds to Improvements at Upper Island Cove School
St. Peter’s Elementary in Upper Island Cove will soon have a new electrical heating system, following a recent $231,895 tender awarded to H.J. Bartlett Electric Inc. of Mount Pearl.
“With this latest investment, nearly $1.2 million has been spent on new roofing, windows and other improvements at St. Peter’s Elementary in recent years,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “The Provincial Government continues to invest heavily in school infrastructure throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, making improvements and upgrades designed to ensure safe and comfortable learning environments for students and staff.”
Work to replace the heating system will take place over the summer months. It is one of more than 1,600 repairs and maintenance projects undertaken at schools in Newfoundland and Labrador since 2004.
“This is good news for our students and staff, knowing that their school is receiving more improvements,” said Glen Littlejohn, MHA for Port de Grave. “Our government is clearly committed to providing a healthy and safe place for learning in Upper Island Cove, and in all of our communities.”
Over the past eight years, more than $504 million has been approved for school infrastructure, a level of investment which is unprecedented in this province’s history. Nine new schools have opened, five more are in various stages of construction, 12 major extension and renovation projects have been completed, and six more are underway or in the planning stages.
