Minister Congratulates National Spelling Bee Champ

Twelve-year-old Jennifer Mong of St. John’s has been declared the best speller in Canada.

Ms. Mong, a Grade 8 student at MacDonald Drive Junior High, won the 2012 Postmedia Canspell National Spelling Bee Wednesday, March 28, in Toronto. She has been invited to compete in the Scripps Spelling Bee in Washington in May.

“Jennifer is a wonderful example of the great things students in Newfoundland and Labrador achieve all the time,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “Her success should serve as an inspiration to other students to participate in events like the national spelling bee, demonstrating what youth can achieve through hard work and dedication. I want to congratulate Jennifer, her family and the school community on this achievement, and wish her the best of luck in Washington.”

Launched in 2005, the Postmedia Canspell National Spelling Bee is designed to engage students in Grades 4 to 8 by celebrating excellence in academic achievement and encouraging positive study habits.

Minister Jackman also acknowledged the hundreds of students who competed in school-level competitions across the province as well as the 55 spellers who made it to the 2012 Telegram Postmedia Canspell Newfoundland and Labrador Regional Spelling Bee, which was won by Ms. Mong and qualified her for the national event.

The 2012 Postmedia Canspell National Spelling Bee will be aired in a one-hour CBC television special April 1.
