Minister Reiterates Support for Safe and Caring Schools

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education, noted today that the Provincial Government remains committed to its Safe and Caring Schools initiative and to promoting learning environments which are free of violence, bullying and harassment of any kind.

“As I have noted in the House of Assembly in the past couple of days, bullying in our schools is absolutely unacceptable,” Minister Jackman said. “Addressing this issue in our schools is a priority for this government, and I encourage all members of our school communities – and all members of our society in general – to work together to ensure all of our children can enjoy a positive learning experience in a bully-free environment.”

The Provincial Safe and Caring Schools Policy was launched in 2006. Initiatives and programs undertaken include:

Meanwhile, every school in the province has its own school development plan which speaks to how they can make safe and caring issues a part of their unique school culture.

An independent review of the Provincial Safe and Caring Schools Policy was announced in November 2011. Upon completion this spring, it will be used to determine future plans for safe and caring schools initiatives and programs in the province’s schools.
