Students Hone Skills Through $200,000 Mathematics Promotions Program

More than 150 schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador have received grants of up to $3,500 to take part in activities to promote the development of mathematics skills and highlight the practical application of mathematics in everyday life.

“The $200,000 Math Promotions program is designed to build positive attitudes towards mathematics through school-based activities such as math competitions, showcases and family-oriented math events,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “It is just one element of the Provincial Government’s Excellence in Mathematics Strategy, introduced in 2007, which has seen more than $15.6 million invested to date in mathematics curriculum renewal, teacher resources, professional development, numeracy support specialists, parent resources, and more.”

Minister Jackman noted that several years ago, parents and educators expressed concern that the mathematics curriculum had strayed too far from the basics.

“We heard those concerns and began a process of curriculum renewal that focuses more on teaching fundamental skills, while also allowing students to develop a conceptual understanding of math processes,” Minister Jackman said. “The new approach has been applauded by math teachers throughout our schools as a more balanced approach to the subject.”

The new mathematics curriculum, which is aligned with the curriculum in most Canadian jurisdictions, has now been implemented for Kindergarten through to Level 1. Implementation for Level 2 will begin in September 2012, and Level 3 the following year.
