Portfolio of Posters Brings Artwork into Schools

Students and teachers throughout Newfoundland and Labrador are exploring the concept of change with the help of a portfolio of posters featuring 40 pieces of artwork from The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery’s permanent collection.

“The Change Constant project has made artwork from 25 artists directly available to our students and teachers,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “The theme acknowledges that change is a constant occurrence in our lives, and the artwork illustrates places and situations where change and transition occur.”

The portfolios were produced at a cost of $63,000 from the Provincial Government’s Cultural Connections strategy. The artwork featured is included in the backgrounder below.

A joint initiative of the Department of Education and The Rooms, the posters were distributed to schools this past fall as a supplementary resource to support the K-12 Visual Art programs and courses in other subject areas, such as Social Studies and Language Arts. The back of the posters include artist biographies, discussion starters, and suggested classroom activities. Change Constant is available in English and French, with 2,000 English copies and 300 French copies printed and distributed to schools.

“The amount of artistic talent in our province is incredible,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “It is encouraging to see how this project highlights the tremendous work of these artists, who are either from Newfoundland and Labrador or have some connection to this province. Most importantly, it provides students with a creative means to understanding the evolution of change through various pieces of artwork.”

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador invests $2.1 million annually in its Cultural Connections strategy. For more information visit: www.ed.gov.nl.ca/edu/k12/culturalconnections/index.html.
