SIFE Memorial Takes on the World

From September 30 to October 2, members of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Memorial will join more than 3,000 student, academic, and business leaders from around the world at the SIFE World Cup in Washington, D.C. SIFE Memorial is representing Canada at the prestigious competition where U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, will greet delegates.

“The Provincial Government wishes the Memorial Students in Free Enterprise team well as they compete on the international stage,” said the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills. “While Newfoundland and Labrador continues to be recognized for post-secondary education that is amongst the most affordable and accessible in Canada, the outstanding achievements of these women and men show we are a leader in the quality of education we provide to students, whose national and international reputation for excellence continues to grow.”

The SIFE Memorial team will present projects that help persons with disabilities discover their entrepreneurial potential; assist medically discharged Armed Forces members with creating their own business enterprise; and help people who earn money in city neighbourhoods by collecting recyclables.

SIFE Memorial earned their spot on Team Canada in May when it outshone 50 teams from universities and colleges across the country. After three days of competition with over 700 other students, the Newfoundland and Labrador team was commended for entrepreneurial programs that “genuinely benefit the community.”

This is the sixth time in the last seven years that SIFE Memorial has represented Canada at the SIFE World Cup – including winning a World Cup championship in 2008.

“The entire province wishes the Memorial Students in Free Enterprise team well as they compete on the international stage,” said Minister Burke. “These men and women continue to show Canada and the world that the spirit of competition and the pursuit of excellence are alive and well in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
