Lighting the Way for Multiculturalism Week 2012

Drivers and pedestrians may notice something a little different lighting their way next week.

On Sunday, March 18, multi-coloured lights surrounding Confederation Building will be turned on in recognition of Multiculturalism Week across Newfoundland and Labrador, which runs March 18 to 24.

“I invite all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to join in the celebration and display multi-coloured lights outside their homes as symbols of diversity and multiculturalism,” said the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills. “Cultural diversity is a strength, and by displaying lights, we proudly show how it makes our communities better, more dynamic places to live.”

Along with encouraging a display of multi-coloured lights, the provincial Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism, through partnerships with many organizations and community groups, has organized a series of special events called Together We Rock! Celebrating Multiculturalism Across the Province.

“Newcomers to our shores are enhancing our social and economic fabric while adding to an already rich and vibrant cultural tradition,” said Minister Burke. “Multiculturalism Week celebrates the contribution of multicultural communities to our growing cultural tapestry, as well as the promise of a bright, prosperous, and vibrant future for Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Since the introduction of the Provincial Immigration Strategy, Diversity ~ Opportunity and Growth, launched in 2007, the Provincial Government has supported initiatives aimed at increasing the number of immigrants who choose Newfoundland and Labrador as their new home. This financial support also encourages multicultural activities that ensure the successful settlement and integration of those who come to the province.
