Investment Continues in St. John’s Social Housing Revitalization

Four social housing units on Vimy Avenue in St. John’s will receive exterior renovations and repairs as part of the ongoing redevelopment of the Cashin Avenue-Froude Avenue social housing neighbourhood. Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation has awarded a contract valued at $144,000 to G.S. Hunt Ltd. to complete the work.

“These upgrades will continue the important revitalization work that has been the focus for the neighbourhood for a number of years, resulting in significant improvements,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “The corporation continues to upgrade our social housing portfolio throughout the province to ensure that we maintain viable housing options for people with the greatest need.”

The work will include installing new siding, windows, doors, and roofs, repairing basements and installing new basement stairs.

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a long-term vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping to create healthier communities. Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.
