Overpass Work Scheduled for St. John’s South

Work is scheduled for the rehabilitation of two overpasses in St. John’s South this construction season as part of the Department of Transportation and Works 2011-12 roads program.

“These overpasses are in the most heavily populated area of our province and see high daily traffic volumes,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “Maintaining our bridges and overpasses throughout the province is an important part of our roads investment.”

The C.N. viaduct, Route 2, Pitts Memorial Drive, will undergo rehabilitation work on the drainage system as well as concrete work on some of the overpass piers on the Water Street end of the structure. Blackhead Road Overpass, also on Route 2, will undergo expansion joint replacement and deck repairs.

“Our government continues to invest in transportation infrastructure,” said Tom Osborne, MHA for St. John’s South. “As a major route in the road network of the Northeast Avalon, Pitts Memorial Drive is vital to moving people and goods throughout the region, and I am pleased to see this work announced for this construction season.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides funding of $216.4 million for road and bridge improvements, supplemented by an additional $35.2 million in Federal Government funding, for a total road and bridge investment in 2011-12 of $251.6 million.
