Paving Scheduled for Pinware Realignment Project
The realignment of a section of Route 510 near the Pinware River in Southern Labrador is nearing completion as the Provincial Government has called a tender for paving the new stretch of highway.
“The realignment of this stretch of road on the Trans Labrador Highway in southern Labrador will greatly improve this section of highway,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “The new alignment will enhance safety for drivers and allow for more effective and efficient snow clearing and maintenance.”
The new section of highway will replace an existing section between Pinware and Red Bay that follows the Pinware River along the base of a cliff. The project is being cost-shared by the Provincial and Federal Governments through the federal Building Canada Fund.
“This eight-kilometre realignment of the Trans Labrador Highway is another example of the Provincial Government’s commitment to investing strategically in priority areas,” said the Honourable John Hickey, Minister of Labrador Affairs. “In this time of growth in our province, particularly in Labrador, where we are seeing increased traffic on our highways and in our communities, it is imperative that we provide the safest infrastructure possible. Through the Northern Strategic Plan for Labrador, we are continuing to expand and improve our vital transportation infrastructure.”
Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides funding of $216.4 million for road and bridge improvements, supplemented by an additional $35.2 million in Federal Government funding, for a total road and bridge investment in 2011-12 of $251.6 million.
