Road Infrastructure Work Included in Work Announced
for Central and Eastern Newfoundland

Communities in central and eastern Newfoundland will see improvements to their transportation network this construction season, as the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announces tenders for a series of infrastructure projects.

“It’s always a pleasure this time of year to announce tenders for the construction season,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “These tenders will see important work completed throughout the province.”

On the Bonavista Peninsula, road work continues with a tender call for the installation of a pipe arch culvert structure on Route 230-14, Charleston, and a second pipe arch culvert structure on Route 235-16, Plate Cove East. Grading and installation of two corrugated steel box culverts is also required on Route 235-29, Birchy Cove.

“Each of these structures will help to reinforce the transportation network in our communities,” said the Honourable Roger Fitzgerald, MHA for Bonavista South. “Our government has made substantial investments in this region which are improving our highways.”

As part of another tender, upgrading and paving will take place on a section of Route 233-13 in Port Blandford and on a 4.8 kilometre section of Route 301, Terra Nova Road. Pulverizing and repaving will take place on a section of Route 310 in Traytown and a section of Route 2-1-24 in Charlottetown will undergo resurfacing. As well, repairs will be made on a section of 2-1-25, Charlottetown, at various locations on Terra Nova Road, on Route 310 and on Route 310-41, St. Brendan’s. A separate tender has also been issued for the installation of new rubber fenders on the St. Brendan’s ferry terminal wharf at Burnside.

“The road and wharf work included in these tenders will allow us to see new pavement and an improved ferry docking area, to the benefit of all travellers in our region,” said Sandy Collins, MHA for Terra Nova. “I am particularly pleased to see that this tender will lead to the completion of hard-surfacing of the portion of Terra Nova Road owned by the Provincial Government.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides funding of $216.4 million for road and bridge improvements, supplemented by an additional $35.2 million in Federal Government funding, for a total road and bridge investment in 2011-12 of $251.6 million. Budget 2011 also includes $5 million for maintenance and upgrades to wharves at ferry terminals.
