Road Work Continues in Eastern Newfoundland

Roads and highways in Bonavista South and Trinity North will see more repairs and improvements this construction season.

“Throughout the last several years, our government has continued to increase investments in our transportation infrastructure,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “This tender will see repairs to Hurricane Igor damaged roads and highways as well as address upgrading and repaving, which will benefit all who travel the roads in this region.”

The tender provides for the upgrading and repaving of approximately 2.25 kilometres on Route 230-14 at Sweet Bay and at the intersection of 230-24 with a local road in Melrose. It also provides for upgrading and resurfacing of Route 230-26, Little Catalina, Route 230-24, Melrose and Route 235-16, Plate Cove East. Road improvements on a section of Route 239 in Trouty are also included.

“This tender, with its numerous projects, is another example of our government’s commitment to quality transportation infrastructure,” said the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Environment and Conservation and MHA for Trinity North. “Maintaining a strong highway system in rural regions is vital to developing our tourism potential and this roadwork will benefit industry and our citizens alike.”

The tender provides for various repairs to areas damaged by Hurricane Igor on Routes 230, 230-14, 235, 235-20, 236, 237, 238 and 239 on the Bonavista Peninsula.

“I am very pleased with the continued investment in the roads and highways of our region,” said the Honourable Roger Fitzgerald, MHA for Bonavista South. “Quality highways are vitally important to our residents, businesses and for the economic development of our region.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides funding of $216.4 million for road and bridge improvements, supplemented by an additional $35.2 million in Federal Government funding, for a total road and bridge investment in 2011-12 of $251.6 million.
