Tender Called for Trans Canada Highway Upgrades

The Department of Transportation and Works has called a tender for the upgrading and paving of more than 26 kilometres of the Trans Canada Highway (TCH) between Baie Verte Junction and Birchy Lake Lookout.

“This is a significant span of our highway system and it requires a makeover,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “Once complete, this project will provide a much better driving experience for all residents and visitors travelling this section of the Trans Canada Highway.”

This project will see approximately 26.6 kilometres of the TCH upgraded and paved and is expected to take the full construction season to complete. This work will be cost-shared with the Federal Government under the federal Building Canada Fund.

“The Trans Canada Highway is the backbone of our road network and is essential for the efficient movement of people and goods,” said Kevin Pollard, MHA for Baie Verte-Springdale. “Enhancing this section of highway will enhance the travelling experience of members of our communities as well as tourists who drive our highways. It will also be of great benefit to commercial drivers travelling through the region.”

Budget 2011 - Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides more than $1 billion for provincial infrastructure investments. This includes $216.4 million in Provincial Government funding for road and bridge improvements throughout the province. This funding will be supplemented by an additional $35.2 million in Federal Government funding, providing for a total road and bridge investment in 2011-12 of $251.6 million.
