First Construction Tender Called in Team Gushue Highway Extension Project

As the clearing of the highway corridor for the Team Gushue Highway extension project nears completion, the Department of Transportation and Works is preparing to call the first tender for the construction phase of the project.

“Now that clearing of the trees and shrubs from the highway corridor is almost complete, it is time to move fully into the construction phase,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “Residents of the Northeast Avalon have been waiting for this important piece of regional highway infrastructure for some time, and we are pleased to be progressing with the construction of a new overpass at Kenmount Road in St. John’s.”

This tender provides for the construction of a two-lane overpass over Kenmount Road in St. John’s, directly adjacent to the existing Team Gushue Highway overpass. The new overpass will serve as a twin structure to the existing overpass and when complete, both will form part of a divided four-lane highway over Kenmount Road.

The eligible construction costs of the Team Gushue Highway extension project are being shared equally between the Federal and Provincial Governments under the federal Building Canada Fund. The Provincial Government will assume additional costs associated with project design, contract administration and land acquisition.

The Team Gushue Highway extension is expected to be completed in 2013. Once completed, the City of St. John’s will assume ownership of the highway.

The highway extension will complete a link across the west end of the City of St. John’s connecting the Outer Ring Road in the north with the Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive in the south. The highway is designed to relieve traffic congestion on major routes in the region.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is continuing its unprecedented commitment to improving and upgrading roads and bridges as part of its multi-year infrastructure strategy valued in excess of $5 billion.
