Heritage Celebrated Through Commemorations Program
Residents are encouraged to get involved with the Provincial Historic Commemorations Program by nominating a significant person, place, event, or tradition of historical importance in Newfoundland and Labrador. The deadline for nominations is February 15, 2012.
"We have so much to be proud of in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Through the Provincial Historic Commemorations Program, we celebrate and commemorate our people, places, traditions, and events, in recognition of the lasting impression they have made on our lives and in our province’s history.”
Launched in 2008, the establishment of a Provincial Historic Commemorations Program was among the objectives outlined in the Provincial Government’s cultural strategy, Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture (2006).
“The Provincial Historic Commemorations Program is important because it recognizes both our tangible as well as our intangible heritage,” said Françoise Enguehard, Chair of the Historic Commemorations Board. “Recognizing aspects of Newfoundland and Labrador’s intangible heritage allows citizens to nominate elements of our culture that may be rare or in danger of being lost.”
Nominations will be accepted by individuals, communities and organizations in the following categories: Place of Provincial Significance, Event of Provincial Significance, Tradition Bearer, Distinctive Cultural Traditions and Practices, and Person of Provincial Significance. For further criteria, guidelines and nomination applications, visit www.seethesites.ca/commemorations-program.aspx or call 709-729-6901.
Past designates of the Provincial Historic Commemorations Program are provided in the backgrounder below.
Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s cultural strategy, more than $56 million has been invested into the arts, culture, and heritage sectors.
