Record Year for St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival
Female filmmakers from this province have written, produced, and directed a record 17 out of 80 films being featured at the 22nd St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival. The festival opens tonight at 8:00 p.m. with the premiere of Beat Down, directed by St. John’s native Deanne Foley and starring Marthe Bernard, Andy Jones, Rob Wells, and Mark O’Brien.
“This contemporary and popular festival received over 480 film submissions this year, of which 277 were international,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “The Provincial Government recognizes the value of this event to our flourishing film industry. We continue to offer our financial support.”
The St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival received $60,000 in support through the Provincial Government’s Cultural Economic Development Program.
“The Provincial Government’s contributions to our festival have been integral to our phenomenal growth, both as a festival and as a cornerstone in the provincial film sector,” said Noreen Golfman, Chair of the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival. “We provide an incredible opportunity for local filmmakers to showcase their work on the world stage.”
