The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

2013 Midget Development West Coast Basketball Program

The Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association (NLBA) will be hosting the boys and girls Midget (15U) National Championships in August of 2013. Teams from all 10 provinces and the territories are expected to compete. In preparation for this national championship the NLBA has created a boys and girls developmental program to prepare the athletes for this competition. Athletes who are eligible are those who have been born in 1998 or 1999 unless approved by the NLBA. The developmental program will be conducted in two phases on the east and west coast of the province.

West Coast
Phase one will be conducted from October 2011 until July 2012. The developmental program will consist of a pool of 30 players (15 male and 15 female) who are selected through an open tryout. The tryout is open to anyone who can attend weekly training sessions in the Corner Brook region. The head coaches for the west coast programs are Frank Foo (Male) and Tom Stewart (Female) of Corner Brook. The program is open to all individuals in the west coast region who are able to attend weekly training sessions.

The open tryout camps will take place on September 25 and October 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for males and 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for females, at Regina High School Gym in Corner Brook.

Aside from the head coaches players will be exposed to local coaches who will assist with the program teaching specialized skills to prepare the athletes for the final tryouts in 2013.

If selected the cost of the program for phase one will be $200.00 per athlete. Athletes will receive over 50 hours of practice time during phase one. Individuals will also play a series of exhibition games and will receive a 2013 reversible jersey and an indoor basketball to practice their skills. Players will also be provided with the option of competing in an off island Atlantic province tournament at their own expense in July of 2012.

Athletes can register on site and are asked to bring their own ball and MCP number along with a $5.00 registration fee payable to the NLBA.
