Premiere Sporting Event Boosted with $15,000 Investment
The Placentia Rowing Club has received $15,000 through the Provincial Government’s Capital Grant Program.
“This grant will be used to help replace the existing boathouse as well as upgrade services, the water course and field in time for the Placentia Regatta’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2013,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “The Placentia Regatta is a highly-anticipated annual event that strives to provide a modern, safe, and healthy atmosphere to visitors and participants.”
The Placentia Rowing Club is among more than 50 community-based organizations, municipalities, and recreation commissions that have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.
“I can't think of a more deserving group to receive this grant,” said the Honourable Felix Collins, Minister of Justice and Attorney General and MHA for Placentia - St. Mary’s. “As an organization, the rowing club has worked so hard year after year to keep the regatta a premiere sporting event in this province. The Placentia Regatta will celebrate its golden anniversary in two years and the facilities need major improvements. These funds will be most welcome.”
Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides $11.5 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
