Women’s Film Festival Granted $60,000 from Provincial Government

The St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival has received $60,000 through the Provincial Government’s Cultural Economic Development Program. This year’s event takes place from October 18 to 22.

“The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is proud to support this highly-anticipated festival focusing on talented female filmmakers and film-lovers,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Each year, this festival provides an opportunity to showcase our flourishing filmmaking community, and for participants to learn from each other while enjoying workshops and watching some incredible films.”

Established in 1989 to support and promote female filmmakers, the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival is one of the longest running festivals in the world. For more information, visit: www.womensfilmfestival.com.

“The increasing popularity of the festival can be directly attributed to the tremendous creativity, passion, and vision of women filmmakers in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women. “Similar to the success of women in many other industries, women are making vital contributions to the creative fabric and economic well-being of the province.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides $2.9 million through its Cultural Economic Development Program to support arts, cultural, and heritage initiatives throughout the province.

“Without the Provincial Government’s support we would not be able to offer up such a world-class line-up of films, workshops, and high-profile speakers,” said Noreen Golfman, Chair of the festival board. “We are proud to play a key role in the province’s booming film industry.”

Projects under the Cultural Economic Development Program are selected based on the strength of the business plan, vision, and potential development within the sector.
