Sports Day in Canada, September 17: Olympic Shooting Demonstration

In celebration of the 2nd Sports Day in Canada, the Newfoundland and Labrador Shooting Association will conduct a public demonstration of 10-metre air rifle and air pistol using the Olympics finals format. The demonstration will occur at 11:00 a.m., on September 17, in Frank Zahn High Performance Marksmanship and CSCA Training Centre, room PE-1002 in the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation, Memorial University.

Spectators will see a range that replicates in a smaller scope that which will be used in London Summer Games, as the fully electronic range is unveiled. The athletes partaking in this demonstration include some of the province’s best shooting athletes, with current and former national team athletes, medalists from the 2011 Canada Games and rising stars. After the finals conclude spectators may try target shooting and talk to the athletes.

As a part of this competition the shooters will participate in the True Sport Give Back Challenge. The athletes have raised a monetary award and selected a charity to support. The winner of the rifle and pistol finals will split this money and donate them to their chosen charity. Charities designated for support include NL Alzheimer’s Society, Canadian Red Cross, Autism Society, Ronald McDonald house, Janeway Hospital, Unicef and Cancer Society.
