Marble Mountain Strengthens Infrastructure with
$450,000 Investment from the Provincial Government

During an event at Marble Mountain Ski Resort held today (Wednesday, August 17), the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, released the details of a $450,000 investment for Marble Mountain, allocated in Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Marble Mountain Ski Resort is one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s premiere tourist attractions,” said Minister French. “Used all year round, this world-class resort reaches peak activity during the winter season with avid skiers, snowboarders, and outdoor enthusiasts flocking their way to the mountain. The Provincial Government recognizes how popular this destination resort has become and we are committed to ensuring that this resource continues to grow.”

The funding will be used to replace the T-bar lift, make repairs to snowmaking water lines, and begin refurbishing chair lifts.

“Marble Mountain is a significant economic generator in the region and the centerpiece of the west coast’s incredible winter tourism attractions,” said the Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Finance and MHA for Humber East. “This investment will enhance the operation of the ski hill for the benefit of local ski and snowboard enthusiasts and tourists.”

Bob Pike, Chair of the Board for Marble Mountain Development Corporation, was delighted with the Provincial Government’s investment.

“Our Marble Mountain team is extremely pleased and excited about the Provincial Government’s continued support and investment in this fantastic facility,” said Mr. Pike. “The investment will be used to support the long-term viability of Marble Mountain and will focus on safety, reliability, and enhancing our customers’ experiences.”

Marble Mountain employs more than 150 people during its peak season of operation from December to April each year. The resort generates revenue in excess of $2.5 million annually, and millions more in tourism-related spending and economic activity. The funding announced today is part of the $1.4 million announced in Budget 2011 to implement tourism initiatives. Working with destination management organizations and the Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism Board, the goal is to double tourism revenue by 2020 by following the strategic directions outlined in Uncommon Potential: A Vision for Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism (Vision 2020).

Newfoundland and Labrador welcomed an unprecedented 518,500 non-resident visitors last year, an increase of 7.3 per cent over the previous year (2009). This was the first time the half-million mark was reached and exceeded in the province. Expenditures by non-resident visitors were over $410 million. Since 2003, the Provincial Government has more than doubled its tourism marketing budget from $6 million to $13 million, and has created an award-winning marketing campaign.
