Virginia Waters Area Provided with Funding to
Upgrade Recreational Infrastructure
Roncalli Elementary School has received $15,000 to assist with the purchase of healthy living equipment, while MacMorran Community Centre has been awarded $12,000 to help with upgrades to the centre’s gymnasium. Both investments have been provided through the Provincial Government’s Capital Grant Program.
“Roncalli Elementary School will use their funding to purchase such items as fun hoops, exercise flooring, bike racks, and interactive dance mats, while MacMorran Community Centre will obtain materials to resurface the gymnasium floor,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Constructing and maintaining recreational infrastructure is an integral component to helping residents lead a healthy, active lifestyle.”
Roncalli Elementary School and the MacMorran Community Centre are among more than 50 community-based organizations, municipalities and recreation commissions that have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.
“MacMorran Community Centre makes significant contributions to the lives of many,” said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and MHA for Virginia Waters. “It is a key component in the social, educational and physical health of the area. We are pleased to support the efforts of the dedicated staff and volunteers with this investment in their centre. In addition, Roncalli Elementary School’s focus on healthy living is paving the way for their students to achieve their full potential. Cultivating healthy bodies contributes to better academic achievement, self-image and social interaction, and we are delighted to support the Roncalli community as it works toward that goal.”
Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides $11.5 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
