Lake Melville Benefits from Recreational Infrastructure Investment

The Lake Melville area has received a total of $15,000 through the Provincial Government’s Capital Grant Program. As a result of this grant, $8,600 is being used to extend the Churchill River Trail and $6,400 is being used to repair the Lake Melville School soccer field.

“The school is purchasing landscaping materials, backstop, and new soccer goals, and the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is extending the Churchill River trail by five kilometres,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Our Capital Grant Program assists organizations such as these that promote healthy, active, and fun activities for residents both young and old.”

The Honourable John Hickey, Minister of Labrador Affairs is the MHA for Lake Melville.

“This funding will support substantial improvements to the soccer field at Lake Melville School in North West River and the Churchill River Trail in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, benefiting both communities,” said Minister Hickey. “As well as promoting health and fitness, sports and recreation are essential to the overall well-being of all our communities.”

Lake Melville School and the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay are among more than 50 community-based organizations, municipalities, and recreation commissions that have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides $11.5 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
