Applications for Seniors Community Recreation Grant Program Now Available Online

Applications for the Seniors Community Recreation Grant Program 2011-12 are now available online. The program supports recreation committees and organizations throughout the province in their efforts to provide a variety of recreational programming for older citizens.

“Our government would like to see all citizens increase their physical activity and live a healthy, active lifestyle,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “This program in particular supports and encourages communities to develop age-friendly physical and social environments that will better support older residents to improve their well-being while also providing them with more opportunities to be active. For those organizations that haven’t heard about this grant program or applied in the past, I encourage them to go online to learn more about the program’s benefits.”

The deadline for receipt of applications is July 22, 2011.

This program is being delivered in collaboration with the Department of Health and Community Services, as part of the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework.

“It is our government’s vision to have a supportive, age-friendly province where seniors contribute to their communities,” said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Health and Community Services and Minister Responsible for Aging and Seniors. “Part of realizing this vision is helping seniors remain as healthy and active as possible. That is one of the key priorities of the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework, through which the Provincial Government has invested $7.5 million in Budget 2011 for the continuation of several programs and initiatives aimed at enhancing the lives of seniors. The Seniors Community Recreation Grant Program complements the investments our government continues to make to enhance the lives of our seniors.”

The Seniors Community Recreation Grant Program is application-based and provides up to $4,000 to assist in the delivery of new or enhanced recreational programs and services. Further details about the program can be found at: www.tcr.gov.nl.ca/tcr/sports/seniors_community.html.
