Recreational Infrastructure Investment of $15,000 for Gander School

The group Parents for Healthy School Grounds has received $15,000 through the Provincial Government’s Capital Grant Program to assist with development of a multipurpose green space adjacent to St. Paul’s Intermediate School, Gander.

“St. Paul’s School will use this investment to construct an outdoor classroom which would include a level playing field, walking trails, classroom space, organic garden, and outdoor activity circuit,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “This project will provide students with a safe place to participate in healthy and fun outdoor activities.”

Parents for Healthy School Grounds is among more than 50 community-based organizations, municipalities and recreation commissions which have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.

“The development of a multipurpose green space for St. Paul’s is great news for the youth of our community,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and MHA for Gander. “Participation in recreation and sport is a vital part of a healthy lifestyle and it is important to instill this in our youth at an early age.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides a total annual investment of $1.3 million to the Capital Grant Program. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
