Portugal Cove South Receives $13,000 for Recreational Infrastructure

The Town of Portugal Cove South will upgrade its infrastructure with the help of $13,000 provided through the Capital Grant Program.

“The funding will be used to upgrade the town’s community centre, such as repairing the roof, replacing outside steps, installing weeping tile, and plumbing,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “This will help residents safely participate in various activities that encourage healthy, active living.”

The Town of Portugal Cove South is among more than 40 community-based organizations, municipalities and recreation commissions which have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.

“The community centre in Portugal Cove South is a hub for community activity in the area and these upgrades will further enhance overall use of the building for a range of activities,” said Ferryland MHA Keith Hutchings. “This building will also play a significant role in next year’s commemorative event recognizing the 100th year anniversary of the Titanic sinking and the receiving of the first wireless distress call from Cape Race Wireless Station. I want to thank the Town of Portugal Cove South and the Portugal Cove South/Cape Race Heritage Inc. for their continued volunteer efforts in enhancing the region.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides a total annual investment of $1.3 million to the Capital Grant Program. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
