The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Provincial Badminton Being Held in Stephenville this Weekend

Stephenville High is the host school for the Provincial Badminton Championships. Eight teams will be competing to determine the team champions. Each encounter in the team competition will consist of five matches: Girls Singles, Boys Singles, Girls Doubles, Boys Doubles and Mixed Doubles.

The first encounter will start at 8:30 a.m. Friday. Teams involved in the team competition include the host, Glovertown Academy, B. L. Morrison School (Postville), Baie Verte High are competing in Division A. Division B teams include, Canon Richards High (Flower’s Cove), Baccalieu Collegiate (Old Perlican), Belanger Memorial (Doyles) and Queen Elizabeth High (Foxtrap).

There is also an individual competition taking place and will feature athletes from the above schools, as well as, Menihek High (Labrador City), St. Peter’s Academy (Westport) and Dorset Collegiate (Pilley’s Island).

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. Each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal, as well, a team sportsmanship banner will be awarded. The top teams will be awarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted Championship Banner. The top individual competitors will receive gold, silver and bronze medals.

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments are made possible, in part, because of the generous support of corporate sponsors. Subway, Dairy Farmers Assoc./School Milk Foundation and R.B.C. are sponsors of SSNL.
