Restart a Heart Program Receives Additional Funding from Provincial Government

More automated external defibrillators will soon be placed in public facilities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. As part of Budget 2011, the Provincial Government will invest $100,000 in the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Restart a Heart campaign.

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced funding for the second phase of the campaign at an event hosted by the foundation at the Recreation Complex in the Town of Conception Bay South.

“This is the second year of a partnership with the Heart and Stroke Foundation which coordinates the Restart a Heart fundraising campaign,” said Minister French. “The main focus of this initiative is to provide a safe environment for citizens to engage in recreational and sport activities. To date, about 50 automated external defibrillators have been put in public facilities throughout the province. In the second phase, they will be installed in swimming pools and community recreational facilities.”

“The Restart a Heart program has the potential to save countless lives across Newfoundland and Labrador," said George Tilley, Chief Executive Officer of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. "With greater access to these life-saving tools in public facilities, our communities will be safer places for all of us to lead more active and healthy lives.”

The funding announced today is in addition to the $100,000 the Provincial Government committed in May 2010 for the initial launch of the campaign.

Funding towards automated external defibrillators supports the goals of the Provincial Government's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy, Newfoundland and Labrador (2007). Since its introduction, more than $70 million in funding has been committed to recreation and sport infrastructure and programming.
