Funds Granted for 2012 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games

The Towns of Carbonear and Harbour Grace have been granted $200,000 collectively by the Provincial Government to assist with the operating costs associated with co-hosting the 2012 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games.

“The Provincial Government is a proud sponsor of the Newfoundland and Labrador Games program," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “The 2012 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games will provide the opportunity for many athletes, coaches and managers throughout the province to participate in a multi-sport competition that supports athletic advancement, sportsmanship, and community-development.”

In addition to this funding, the Provincial Government will cover travel and transportation costs for all of the athletes, coaches, officials and managers, at the cost of approximately $150,000.

"The 2012 Summer Games for the communities of Carbonear and Harbour Grace will be a tremendous benefit to the entire area,” said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Health and Community Services and MHA for Carbonear-Harbour Grace. “Improvements to be made to our sports infrastructure will be a lasting legacy of what will undoubtedly be another very successful event in our area."

“The Town of Harbour Grace and its residents are extremely excited to once again co-host the 2012 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games with the Town of Carbonear,” said Don Coombs, Mayor of Harbour Grace. “We will again get a chance to showcase our excellent recreation facilities and the hospitality that we are well known for. Our great volunteer base is also waiting in anticipation of this great event and we encourage all residents to consider visiting the towns in August 2012 as their holiday destination.”

The Newfoundland and Labrador Games program was established in 1976 and is held every two years, alternating winter and summer games. Athletes from all areas of the province, aged 11-18, compete in a range of sports selected by the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation in conjunction with provincial sports organizations. The games are designed to encourage participation in sport, recreation and community development, and the pursuit of excellence.
Since the release of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), support for athlete development has increased steadily from $2.5 million to more than $3.5 million. This includes grants to provincial sports organizations, increased funding for coaching and long-term athlete development initiatives, the Newfoundland and Labrador Games program, the Canada Games program, and the Premier’s Athletic Awards.
