The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

Provincial Championship Boosted by Canada Games

This weekend, 12 shooters participated in a combined Air Rifle / Air Pistol Provincial Championships and an interprovincial air gun competition. The event was shot in the Frank Zahn High Performance and CSCA Training Facility. By the end of it, Samantha Marsh (371/400) was deemed both Women’s and Junior Women’s Rifle Champion, Dave Woolridge (575/600) was declared Men’s Rifle Champion and Ben Taylor (564/600) reclaimed Junior Men’s Rifle Champ. Anthony Smith (532/600) earned the tile of Men’s Pistol Champ and Emma Meulenkamp (361/400) was a double champion in both Women’s and Junior Women’s Pistol.

Overall the numbers remained unchanged from last year, but there was an increase in the number of junior athletes. More importantly the level of competition is up from previous years. Organizers feel that this is directly a result of the intense training prior to the Canada Winter Games. Also, of the eight juniors who shot in the championships, six are eligible for the next Winter Games. All of these athletes have kicked off the race to the 2015 Games in good form.

Finally, the results were submitted as the province’s entry in the monthly Atlantic Canada e-match. Newfoundland and Labrador were able to claim top spots (1 and 2) in all events, except men’s are pistol where we were 2 and 3.
