The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Five Provincial Girls Basketball Tournaments to be Held This Weekend

Five high school provincial girls basketball champions will be declared this weekend, as the girls teams take to the court.

Six teams will be competing in the Small Schools Girls Basketball tournament, which is being hosted by E.A. Butler All Grade in McKays. Competing in the tournament are the host, E. A Butler All Grade, St. Mary’s All Grade (Mary’s Harbour), St. Joseph’s All Grade (Terrenceville), Valmont Academy (Kings’s Point), Main River Academy (Pollard’s Point), and St. Mark’s School (King’s Cove). The tournament begins at 9:00 a.m., Friday. Semi-final games will be held at 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on Saturday and concludes with the championship match at 12:00 noon on Saturday.

The 2A Girls Basketball teams converge on Fogo Island Central Academy. Eight teams will compete in a two-division round robin play beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Friday. The FICA Gym and the Venture Gymnasium will be used. Competing in the Green Division will be the host (Fogo Island Central Academy), French Shore Academy (Port Saunders) D.C. Young School (Port Hope Simpson) and Fatima Academy (St. Brides). Gold Division teams include Pearson Academy (Wesleyville), St. Lawrence Academy, St. Peter’s Academy (Westport) and Bay D’Espoir Academy (Milltown). Round robin play continues all day Friday. Crossovers are scheduled from 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, followed with the championship game at 1:00 p.m.

The 3A Provincial Girls Basketball Tournament will take place at Laval High in Placentia. Eight teams will be competing for the championship banner. Red Division teams include the host (Laval High), Stephenville High, Mobile Central High and Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Goose Bay). Competing in White Division are Dunne Memorial (St. Mary’s), Stella Maris Academy (Trepassey), Roncalli Central High (Avondale) and Gander Collegiate. Play beings on Friday at 9:00 a.m. and round robin play continues until the last game at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday. The crossover games are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and 10:15 a.m., Sunday with the championship game scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Sunday.

St. Kevin’s High in Goulds is the host for the Provincial Girls 4A Basketball championships. Six teams will play in a two-division round robin format. The Blue Division will see play between the host (St. Kevin’s High), Bishops College (St. John’s) and St. Bon’s School (St. John’s). Competing in the White Division will be Gonzaga High (St. John’s), O’Donel High (Mount Pearl), and Corner Brook High. Round robin play begins at 3:00 p.m on Thursday and continuing all day on Friday. The cross over games will be played at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., Saturday with semi-final games being played at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.

The Fair Play Girls Basketball tournament is being hosted by Clarenville High. Five teams will be competing for top honours. The host, Clarenville High will be competing with Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Carbonear Collegiate, Gonzaga High (St. John’s) and Corner Brook High. Games get underway at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday and will continue all day Friday and Saturday morning with the championship game at 4:00 p.m.

In addition to the gold and silver SSNL medals, a championship banner will be awarded to the winning team. SSNL believes strongly in the values and principles of sportsmanship. In recognition of this, an individual sportsmanship medal will be presented to one deserving person from each team. All teams and officials vote to recognize a team who has displayed great sportsmanship, as well. This team is awarded the Team Sportsmanship Banner.
