The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Five Provincial Boys Basketball Tournaments This Weekend

Five high school provincial boys basketball champions will be declared this weekend, as the boys teams take to the court.

The Small Schools Boys Basketball tournament, is being hosted by Christ the King School in Rushoon. Eight teams will compete in a two-division round robin tournament. Competing in the Black Division will be St. Mary’s All Grade (Mary’s Harbour), Hampden Academy, St. Joseph’s All Grade (Terrenceville) and the host, Christ the King School. Vying for top honours in the Red Division is Valmont Academy (Kings Point), Bishop White All Grade (Port Rexton), E. A. Butler All Grade (McKays) and Fortune Bay Academy. The tournament begins at 3:00 p.m., Thursday. Crossovers will be held at 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on Saturday and concludes with the championship match at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.

The 2A Boys Basketball teams converge on Plum Point as Viking Trail Academy plays host. Six teams will compete in a two-division round robin play beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. Competing in Division A will be the host (Viking Trail Academy), D.C. Young School (Port Hope Simpson) and Grandy’s River Collegiate (Burnt Islands). Division B teams includes Stella Maris Academy (Trepassey), Fitgerald Academy (English Hr. East) and Holy Cross School (Eastport). Round robin play continues all day Friday. Crossovers are scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, followed with the championship game.

The 3A Provincial Boys Basketball Tournament will take place at Stephenville High. Eight teams will be competing for the championship banner. Division A teams include the host (Stephenville High), Pasadena Academy, Gander Collegiate and Bay D’Espoir Academy (Milltown). Competing in Division B are Dunne Memorial (St. Mary’s), St. Lawrence Academy, Holy Spirit High (Manuels) and Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Goose Bay). Play beings on Thursday at 3:45 p.m. and round robin play continues until 10:45 a.m. on Saturday. The crossover games are at 1:00 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. Saturday with the championship game scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Saturday.

Fatima Academy in St. Brides is the host for the Provincial Boys 4A Basketball championships. Eight teams will play in a two-division round robin format. The Black Division will see play between the host (Fatima Academy), Gonzaga High (St. John’s), Bishops College (St. John’s) and Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor). Competing in the Blue Division will be Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John’s), O’Donel High (Mount Pearl), Corner Brook High and St. Catherine’s Academy (Mount Carmel). Round Robin play begins at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday and continuing all day on Friday. The cross over games will be played at 9:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m., Saturday with the championship game scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

The Fair Play Boys Basketball tournament is being hosted by Clarenville High. Five teams will be competing for top honours. The host, Clarenville High will be competing with Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Carbonear Collegiate, Gonzaga High (St. John’s) and Corner Brook High. Games get underway at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday and will continue all day Friday and Saturday morning with the championship game at 4:00 p.m.

In addition to the gold and silver SSNL medals, a championship banner will be awarded to the winning team. SSNL believes strongly in the values and principles of Sportsmanship. In recognition of this, an individual sportsmanship medal will be presented to one deserving person from each team. All teams and officials vote to recognize a team who has displayed great sportsmanship, as well. This team is awarded the Team Sportsmanship Banner.
