Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame to Induct Four New Members

Four individuals were recently selected by the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame Board of Governors for induction into the provincial sports hall of fame. The new members will be inducted into the provincial sports hall of fame during Sport Newfoundland and Labrador’s annual Stars and Legends Awards Gala scheduled to take place in St. John’s on April 2, 2011.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame is designed to recognize, honour and pay tribute to individuals on the basis of playing ability, sportsmanship and character and who have achieved extraordinary distinction in any sport, whether that distinction be achieved in amateur and/or professional athletics. It also recognizes, honours and pays tribute to those individuals who have given distinguished services and who have made a major contribution to the development and advancement of amateur sport in Newfoundland and Labrador. Lastly, it encourages the development of all aspects of sport by permanently recording the achievements and history of such individuals.

“We wish to acknowledge the supreme accomplishments that merit the selection and induction of each of this year's inductees. They each established with much perseverance, dedication and tremendous effort a significant level of achievement which honour they justifiably deserve,” said John McGrath, Chairman of the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame Board of Governors.

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador is again this year combining its two major recognition events into one celebration – the Stars and Legends Awards Gala. During one magnificent evening to recognize sport excellence, the Newfoundland and Labrador Annual Awards Ceremony and the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place. The Legends who have built provincial sports and the Stars who will become tomorrow’s legends will be honoured at the gala.

The 4th annual Stars and Legends Awards Gala will take place on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland in St. John’s beginning at 6:30 p.m. This year’s awards gala will be co-hosted by Jonathan Crowe and Ryan Snoddon of CBC News: Here and Now.

Biographies of Latest Newfoundland and Labrador
Sports Hall of Fame Inductees

Judith “Judy” May has been heavily involved in coaching, promoting and managing the sport of cross country skiing in Newfoundland and Labrador for more than 30 years. From cross country ski instruction, to attaining her Level III, Judy has been there for the entire Newfoundland and Labrador cross country skiing community. Judy has been involved on both provincial and national levels; coaching the Newfoundland and Labrador Cross Country Ski Team from 1991-1999 and team manager from 1987-2000. As well as being Event Chair for Provincial and Atlantic Championships at Blow Me Down Cross Country Ski Club from 2000-2007. On the National Level, Judy once again coached on several occasions at the Canadian and Eastern Canadian Championships from 1989-2000. Judy also led the Winter Games teams as manager in 1987 and 1991 and coached in the games on three other occasions. She also coached at the Atlantic Championships from 2000-2005 in P.E.I, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador. In 1989 Judy was named the City of Corner Brook Coach of the Year, and in 2004 was named Corner Brook Volunteer of the Year. Judy has made a great impact and is a valuable asset for Cross Country Newfoundland and Labrador.

Adam Morgan’s diving career began at the age of six and just one year later he was winning his first medals. He was a three time member of the Canadian National Diving Team and competed at the 1994 (Silver Medal, three metre), 1997 and 1998 Can-Am-Mex International Diving Competition against the United States, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil and Philippines. In 1998-1999 Morgan won one silver and two bronze medals at the Canadian National Junior Diving Championships. In 2001 he competed at the Canada Summer Games where he won one gold and two silver medals becoming the only Newfoundlander to achieve this individual honour prior to these games. Adam went on to have a successful college diving career where he was a member of the Texas A & M Diving Team which competed in the Big X11 Conference that included Texas Tech, Colorado, Texas, Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State. He held the school record in the one metre championship event between 1999 and 2004 and was a three-time All American diver. Adam placed in the top three in every NCCA competition while attending Texas A & M, which conference had at least an average of 12 tournaments a year.

Glen Normore has had a long and successful career as both an athlete and builder. Known as being a double threat on the court with one of the best long range shots combined with the defensive capability that opponents feared. He played junior high at Dawson before becoming an elite player at Booth Memorial High School. In 1974 Glenn finished high school and went on to play for Acadia University from 1974-1976, placing 3rd in the CIS in 1975. In 1978, Glenn competed with the Newfoundland Team at the Junior Nationals and won a silver medal, where he was named the MVP, top scorer and named to the tournament all-star team. From 1980 to 1995 Glenn won six straight titles in the St. John’s Men’s Division 1 League and one with Memorial University. During this time, he also won several provincial championships and was named MVP in nearly every tournament. Mr. Normore also had a long coaching career at various levels including junior high school, provincial, Canada Games and Varsity. In 1995, he coached the provincial team that won the U15 Eastern Canadian Championships. Glenn also served as President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association, President with the St. John’s Men’s Basketball League executive in addition to various other roles throughout his career. In addition, Glenn also served on the board of Canada Basketball and was Canada’s representative with the Federation International Basketball Association. Glenn Normore has had a successful career as an athlete, coach and administrator and is well respected in the basketball community.

Ronald Patrick Tobin is considered to be the number one basketball player from Newfoundland and Labrador of all time. In 1972, he was named captain of the first Memorial University Men’s Basketball team to play and win an AUAA basketball game and was named the winner of the Outstanding College Athlete of America Award. During his career at MUN he received other prestigious awards such as Memorial University’s Athlete of Year and was named to the Memorial Athletic Honor Society. In 1973 Tobin was the first Newfoundlander invited to the men’s national team training camp in preparation for the Montreal Olympics. Locally, Ron played 25 successful years of first division basketball in the St. John’s Basketball League and in 1999/2000 won both the St. John’s and Provincial first division championships. During his career, Ron won many scoring titles, was named MVP in provincial and national tournaments, he was named defensive player of the year and named to numerous all-star teams. In 2002-2003 he was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Hall of Fame. Ron Tobin was a complete player and an outstanding athlete, who has given much success to the sport of basketball in Newfoundland and Labrador.
