Minister Congratulates Participants of
2011 Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games

From February 18 to 20, the dedication of over 120 athletes from across the province was featured at its very best during the 2011 Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games, held in Corner Brook.

“Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador has been creating opportunities and enriching the lives of athletes for over 22 years,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “I extend congratulations to the athletes, organizers, and volunteers who participated in this highly-anticipated event and commend them for their hard work. I also extend best wishes to those athletes – selected by the results of these games – who will represent the province at the 2012 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Alberta next February.”

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, through the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, provides $24,500 in annual funding to Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador.

Budget 2010: The Right Investments – For Our Children and Our Future provides $1.3 million in new funding to improve existing programming and introduce initiatives which support the goals of the provincial recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007). Since the launch of the strategy, more than $70 million in new Provincial Government funding has been committed to support recreational and sport infrastructure, equipment, and programming throughout the province.
