Provincial Government Supports Interactive Sports Event
The Provincial Government has provided $25,000 to Sport Newfoundland and Labrador (Sport NL) to help host Sportfest, an interactive sporting event for youth, to be held May 12-14 at the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Centre (Powerplex) in St. John’s.
“The Provincial Government is pleased to support this innovative event, and to partner with Sport NL to provide children and youth with opportunities to both participate and learn about the importance of sport and physical activity,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, who attended today’s announcement at the Powerplex. “This is a great way to work collaboratively with our sport and recreation governing bodies to promote an active, healthy lifestyle.”
Sportfest will offer seven different sport zones featuring various activities and information from more than 30 provincial sports organizations. This event is open to the public, free-of-charge.
Doug Fowler, President of Sport NL, welcomed the Provincial Government support.
“This three day, fully-interactive sport festival is the first of its kind in Newfoundland and Labrador and will offer an exciting opportunity for the youth of this province,” said Mr. Fowler. “The more than 5,000 youth participating will learn about the many health benefits associated with physical activity and also have the opportunity to try their hand at a variety of sport-related activities.”
