Grand Falls-Windsor Soccer Pitch Receives $15,000 Boost

Avid soccer players and fans in Grand Falls-Windsor will enjoy upgrades to the Centennial Field soccer pitch, with the help of a $15,000 grant provided through the Provincial Government’s Capital Grant Program.

“This funding will be used to assist with the purchase and installation of spectator bleachers and surface upgrades at the local soccer pitch,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Upgrading provincial recreation infrastructure protects government and community investments in these facilities, ensuring residents of all ages have a safe, pleasant environment in which to pursue social and physical activities.”

The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor is among more than 40 community-based organizations, municipalities and recreation commissions which have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.

“An investment in recreational infrastructure such as our soccer pitch is an investment in our young people,” said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation Trade and Rural Development and MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor – Buchans. “Soccer is a sport that has been embraced by an increasing number of youth in our town, so I welcome this announcement of improvement and upgrades to the facilities.”

“This is exciting news for soccer enthusiasts in the area,” said Grand Falls-Windsor-Green Bay South MHA Ray Hunter. “Supporting and maintaining our province’s recreational infrastructure is essential, if we are to sustain it for the enjoyment of future generations.”

Budget 2010: The Right Investments – For Our Children and Our Future provides an additional $300,000 to the Capital Grant Program, bringing the total annual investment in this program to $1.3 million. Since the introduction of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million in new funding has been committed for recreation and sport infrastructure and programming.
