New Recreation Infrastructure for Gull Island

The Corpus Christi Community Special Projects Committee in Gull Island has received $15,000 through the Provincial Government’s Capital Grant Program to upgrade the community’s recreational infrastructure.

“This funding will be used to assist with the construction of a new playground and recreation area,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Not only will this new infrastructure provide the community a safe and enjoyable play area for children, and a meeting place for all residents, it will also encourage participation in outdoor physical and social activities.”

The Corpus Christi Community Special Projects Committee is among more than 40 community-based organizations, municipalities and recreation commissions which have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.

“An investment in recreational infrastructure in our communities is an investment in our young people, and I am delighted with this funding commitment,” said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation and MHA for Trinity-Bay de Verde. “It will also contribute to the social well-being of all residents, giving them another social and recreational outlet.”

Budget 2010: The Right Investments – For Our Children and Our Future provides an additional $300,000 to the Capital Grant Program, bringing the total annual investment in this program to $1.3 million. Since the introduction of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million in new funding has been committed for recreation and sport infrastructure and programming.
