New Playground Equipment Announced for Whitbourne

The Town of Whitbourne has received $15,000 from the Provincial Government’s Capital Grant Program to assist with the purchase and installation of playground equipment that is designed to be physically accessible for all children.

“This project is ideally aligned with the goals of our recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador, which seeks to provide greater access to recreational opportunities for all of our citizens,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “These upgrades will provide all children in the community with a greater opportunity to participate in daily outdoor activities.”

The Town of Whitbourne is among more than 40 municipalities, recreation commissions, and community-based organizations which have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.

“Whitbourne is a growing community and is strategically situated to expand further,” said the Honourable Felix Collins, Minister of Justice and Attorney General and MHA for Placentia – St. Mary’s. “The provision of recreational services for all children, through the province’s recreation and sport strategy, is an integral and important component of that development.”

Budget 2010: The Right Investments – For Our Children and Our Future provides an additional $300,000 to the Capital Grant Program, bringing the total annual investment in this program to $1.3 million. Since the introduction of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million in new funding has been committed for recreation and sport infrastructure and programming.
