Right to Know Week - September 26–30, 2011

To celebrate Right to Know (RTK) Week, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner will participate in a number of public and private events during the week of September 26-30, along with several other sponsoring organizations.

The purpose of RTK Week is to raise awareness about people’s right to access government information, while promoting freedom of information as essential to both democracy and good governance.

In 2011, the Canadian RTK Week will take place from September 26-30. This year marks the sixth year that Canadians have celebrated RTK Week, and there are a great number of events planned coast to coast, including several in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Access and Privacy Analysts from the OIPC will be giving seminar presentations on Social Networking and Employee Use of Facebook to both private and public groups in several areas of the province. Presentations open to the public include: Tuesday, September 27, at 7:00 p.m. at Grenfell College, Corner Brook, and College of the North Atlantic (CNA) Campus Lecture Theatre, Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The Commissioner’s Office, the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy (ATIPP) Office, and Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), will host an information booth at the MUN Campus Student Centre, on Tuesday, September 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. As part of this information booth there will be handouts as well as a RTK Week survey, and prizes.

Also part of the 2011 RTK Week celebrations is the launch of the 2nd Annual RTK Week Essay Competition. This contest is open to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians studying at the secondary or post-secondary level, as well as non-residents studying at Newfoundland and Labrador secondary and post-secondary institutions. Further information on this competition will be released separately.

The goal of RTK Week is to raise global awareness of individual’s right to access government information and to promote access to information as a fundamental human right.
