Grade 5 Students Encouraged to Participate in National Forest Week Contest

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Grade 5 students are invited to take part in the Department of Natural Resources’ National Forest Week poster contest.

“National Forest Week provides the opportunity to highlight the importance of the forest industry to our economy, recreation and way of life,” said the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. “This contest ties into the students’ curriculum, and provides students an avenue to reflect on the enjoyment they get from the forests in our province. We look forward to their creative and thoughtful submissions to the contest.”

National Forest Week will take place September 18-24 with the theme identified as Forests: Forever Rooted in Our Lives.

A provincial winner will be selected and will receive a Playstation3 game system. The winner’s class will also be offered a field trip with forestry staff during Forest Week and a new computer. The contest will also name three regional winners, one each from eastern, western and Labrador regions of the province. Each regional winner will receive an IPod and a framed copy of their poster. Twelve entries from the contest will be featured in the 2012 National Forestry Week calendar.

Entries will be judged based on originality, creativity and adherence to the theme. Entries must be postmarked by June 24.  For complete details and contact information, please visit www.gov.nl.ca/nr/forestry/index.html#2.
