Municipal Capital Works Funding Announced for Labrador

Through the 2011 Municipal Capital Works program $2.6 million has been allocated for municipal infrastructure projects in Labrador.

“Labrador is full of opportunities and our government is pleased to help support municipalities meet their infrastructure needs,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “Both residents and industry will benefit from these projects and I look forward to the continued growth of this region of the province.”

Through the 2011 Municipal Capital Works program, Happy Valley-Goose Bay will receive funding and is in the process of determining which projects will proceed. The community of Port Hope Simpson will receive funding to conduct upgrading of two roads and L’Anse au Clair will receive funding to complete a paving project. William’s Harbour will receive funding for water system upgrades.

“Happy Valley-Goose Bay has seen tremendous growth in recent years which will continue as major projects in Labrador move forward,” said the Honourable John Hickey, Minister of Labrador Affairs and MHA for Lake Melville. “Our government has demonstrated strong support for Labrador such as the south coast and Labrador West, and this funding is another example of our commitment.”

Labrador City will make improvements to Bartlett Drive, Hudson Drive, MacPharland Drive and Tamarack Drive, while Wabush will conduct reconstruction of Banting Street, Cabot Street, Grenfell Street and Whiteway Street.

“These road improvement projects will be of substantial benefit to Labrador City and Wabush,” said Jim Baker, MHA for Labrador West. “Led by the mining industry, the two communities of Labrador West continue to expand and we must ensure our municipal infrastructure can appropriately support our communities.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador included $140.8 million for new and ongoing municipal infrastructure projects. When combined with federal cost-shared programs and municipal contributions, the total investment this year is expected to be approximately $219 million.
