Conception Bay Communities to Receive $5.6 Million in Infrastructure Funding

Several communities in the Conception Bay region of the province will benefit from a substantial investment of approximately $5.6 million through the 2011 Municipal Capital Works program for municipal infrastructure.

“Many of the fastest growing communities in Newfoundland and Labrador are located along Conception Bay and I am pleased to support their efforts to enhance municipal infrastructure,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “These projects will have a long-lasting impact and we are pleased to work with local municipal leaders to make these projects a reality.”

The Town of Conception Bay South will receive approximately $3 million for a number of water and sewer upgrading projects, along with street upgrading and paving projects.

“The Town of Conception Bay South is a dynamic community that provides extensive services to area residents,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation and MHA for Conception Bay South. “Through its partnership with the Provincial Government the town can continue to provide a high standard of living which is one of the reasons it is such a wonderful place to live.”

Paradise is receiving approximately $2 million in funding to complete water and sewer upgrades to Quilty’s Road and Stonewall Drive, along with street improvements to Paradise Road.

“Municipal infrastructure support for the Town of Paradise is important as many new residents decide to call this community home,” said Paul Davis, MHA for Topsail. “An investment in communities in this area is important as we strive to ensure our region continues to flourish.”

Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s will receive approximately $600,000 in funding to support a number of street improvements at: Loop Drive; Northpoint Road; Thorburn Road; Knight’s Road; and Hanlons Road. The Town of Wabana will also receive funding for street improvements, as well as funding for a sanitary sewer service study.

“I am so pleased to see a variety of municipal infrastructure work being undertaken throughout our region,” said David Brazil, MHA for Conception Bay East-Bell Island. “Residents of Bell Island will benefit from the work to be undertaken to improve local roads and the towns of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s and Paradise will continue their strong growth as a result of these important investments.”

All projects will be undertaken on a cost-shared basis with municipalities with the ratio dependent upon the population of the respective municipality.

“We have taken a long-term view and invested in our municipal infrastructure,” said Steve Kent, MHA for Mount Pearl North. “The investment we make today will not only support current residents, but those who decide to live in these communities in the future will also benefit from our government’s support.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador included $140.8 million for new and ongoing municipal infrastructure projects. When combined with federal cost-shared programs and municipal contributions, the total investment this year is expected to be approximately $219 million.
